The mountaineer Reinhold Messner proposed in 1995 mount k2 's elevation at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft) and this figure is widely accepted by many other sources such as CNN.

It was not until July 31, 1954 that mount K2 was climbed successfully by Hermann Buhl , an Austrian mountaineer , climber and member of the German expedition led by Karl Maria Heigelin mount karff .
There have been six deaths on mount k2 . The most famous death happened August 2008 when nine mountaineers died in the mount k2 mountaineering disaster .
